Local conditions — Urangan, Hervey Bay QLD

Weather, roads
and local news.

Conditions and headlines for Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast, gathered for the people who store a caravan, boat or camper here, or tow one in and out of town.

Weather, marine and road panels read live data when it is available. The headline lists are pulled automatically from public news feeds, and every item links straight back to the publisher who wrote it — we do not write those stories and we do not host them. If the data cannot be reached, the standing information on this page still applies.

Weather

The next six days
in Urangan.

Worth a look before you pick a tow day, or before you decide whether the van wants a roof over it this month.

Hervey Bay is subtropical, and the winter is the reason people come. Between May and September days usually sit around 22–24°C with clear skies, light winds and very little rain.

Summer is humid, with days through the high 20s and into the low 30s. The storm season runs from November to March, and most of the year's rain falls between December and March, often as short heavy afternoon downpours rather than steady days of it.

On the water

Wave and swell
in the Strait.

For the boat owners who keep a trailer here, seven minutes from Urangan Boat Harbour.

The Great Sandy Strait sits behind K'gari (Fraser Island), and that shelter is the whole story: the water off Urangan Boat Harbour is normally a good deal calmer than the open coast on the other side of the island, and it stays workable on days when outside is not.

It is still open water with a big tidal range, and a strong south-easterly will stand up a short chop across the Strait quickly. Check the Bureau of Meteorology coastal waters forecast for the Fraser Island coast before you head out.

Roads

Road events near
Hervey Bay.

Incidents, roadworks and closures within 200 km of Hervey Bay — the whole Bruce Highway approach from Gympie to Bundaberg — listed nearest first.

Almost everyone towing into Urangan comes off the Bruce Highway, then east along the Maryborough–Hervey Bay Road. From there it is Boundary Road for the airport end of town and the Esplanade along the waterfront, which is the slowest stretch on a holiday weekend and through whale season.

Roadworks and flooding are most common in the wet, between December and March, and the Bruce Highway south of Maryborough is the section that closes. Give yourself room in the schedule if you are towing in that window, and check conditions on the morning you travel rather than the night before.

Property market

What Hervey Bay
property is doing.

A storage yard watches the property market for a practical reason. New estates around Hervey Bay are built on smaller blocks with tighter covenants, so fewer houses have a driveway long enough for a van and fewer again are allowed to keep one parked out the front.

Rental demand does the same thing from the other direction: when people are renting rather than buying, the van has to go somewhere off-street. That is most of why covered sites here fill up before summer.

Around the Fraser Coast

Local headlines.

General Hervey Bay and Fraser Coast news — council works, events, the harbour, and whatever else is going on in town. Headlines come from public news feeds and each one opens on the publisher's own site.

Towing and roadworks

Caravan travel
and road projects.

Longer-running roadworks on the Bruce Highway and the Maryborough–Hervey Bay Road, and caravan travel reporting worth reading before a long tow. Again, these are other people's stories and the links go to them.

Through the year

Seasonal storage
and travel tips.

What holds up all year

A van that is parked up for months wants different care from one that gets used every other weekend. These apply whatever the season is doing.

  • Get a roof over it if you can. Sun is what kills seals, decals and tyres in this climate, and it does it quietly.
  • Leave the roof vents cracked rather than shut, so the van breathes and does not grow mould through a humid month.
  • Take the battery out or keep it on a trickle charge. An idle battery in Queensland heat does not last the season.
  • Check tyre pressures before you move a van that has been parked a while, and look for flat spots and sidewall cracking.
  • Turn the gas off at the bottle and check the regulator before a long park-up.
  • Rinse the salt off a boat before it goes away — there is water on site for exactly that.
  • Make sure your insurance covers the van while it is in storage, not only while it is being towed.
  • Book covered sites ahead of the crowd. They go first before summer and before the school holidays.

Ready when you are

Give John a ring.

Tell him what you have got and how long you need it stored. He will find you a site. Bookings are taken over the phone or by email — there is nothing to fill in online.
