What a covered site is

Nine metres by three,
out of the Queensland sun.

A covered site is a marked bay on the concrete hardstand with a Colorbond roof over the top of it, held up on steel posts. It is open at the sides, so air moves through and nothing sits in a sealed box sweating on a humid day, but the top of your van never sees direct sun or hail.

That matters more here than people expect. Hervey Bay gets a hard, high UV load for most of the year, and a van parked in the open takes all of it. Roof seals and window seals go chalky and crack, which is where water gets in later. Decals lift and fade. Plastic hatches and light lenses go brittle. Tyres that carry no load and sit in full sun perish from the sidewall in, so a set can be visually fine and legally finished at the same time. Between November and March the same yard gets storms, and that is when hail and driven rain do their damage in a single afternoon.

A roof takes most of that away for a few dollars a day. If you are leaving a van or a boat standing for a season rather than a weekend, it is the single most useful thing you can do for it short of a shed at home.

Who takes a covered site

  • Caravan and pop-top owners storing between trips, or over the wet season.
  • People flying out of Hervey Bay Airport who do not want the van on open bitumen for three weeks.
  • Boat owners who launch at the marina or Mary River Heads and want the hull and the cover kept out of the sun.
  • Camper trailer and slide-on owners who have run out of room at home or cannot park a van on the street.
  • Grey nomads wintering in Hervey Bay who need somewhere for the rig between legs.

How to book a covered site

Three steps,
none of them online.

There is no cart, no booking widget and no deposit to pay on this site. Covered sites are arranged with John over the phone or by email.

1. Ring or email

Call 0434 718 132 and ask for John, or email Email us. Have the overall length and height of your rig handy, and the dates you need.

2. He confirms a site

John checks what is free under the roof, tells you the current rate and, if you are staying on, the long-term price. If your rig is too long for a covered bay he will say so and put you in the open yard instead.

3. Drive it in

Come in any day between 8AM and 5PM. John meets you at the gate, walks you to the bay and settles the payment with you on the spot. Nothing to pay before you arrive.

Questions we get asked

Covered parking,
answered plainly.

How big is a covered site, really?

Nine metres long by three metres wide, under roof. Measure your rig the way it sits on the road — from the tip of the drawbar or the towball coupling to the back of the spare wheel, bumper bar or outboard. That total is the number that has to fit under nine metres, not the body length in the brochure. If you are within a few hundred millimetres, ring and describe it rather than guessing.

How long can I leave it there?

Either way suits us. Short stays run daily up to about thirty days, which covers most trips away and most airport runs. Past that it becomes an ongoing long-term rental, which is priced differently and works out better per day. You do not have to decide up front — plenty of people start on a short stay and roll into a long-term site.

What should I do before I drop it off?

Clear out anything that can go off or attract ants, turn the gas off at the bottle, and leave the fridge door propped open. Put the handbrake on and chock the wheels if you carry chocks. Water is available on site, so you can rinse salt off a boat or wash the road grime off before it goes under the roof. Give John a mobile number and a rough pick-up date, and take your own insurance details with you.

When can I get to my van?

Between 8AM and 5PM, seven days a week. The yard is fully fenced with gated access, so it is not a twenty-four hour self-serve site — somebody is there during those hours. If you are coming back on a late flight, pick the van up the following morning rather than counting on after-hours access.

Is power included?

Water is available on site as standard. Power is available on request rather than being run to every bay, so mention it when you call if you want to keep a battery on charge or run a dehumidifier. John will tell you what can be arranged and what it costs.

What if my rig is longer than 9 metres?

Then a covered bay will not take it, and we will not pretend otherwise. Anything twelve metres and up — fifth-wheelers, big boats on trailers, horse floats, trucks and machinery — goes on the open hardstand in the same fenced yard, through the same gate. See uncovered parking, or ring and describe the rig and John will tell you straight away which one you need.

Longer or taller rigs

Over nine metres?
Use the open yard.

Same gate, same fence, same hours, no roof. Open hardstand sites take fifth-wheelers, big boats on trailers, horse floats, trucks, work utes and machinery, from $15 a day indicative.

Ready when you are

Ask John what is under the roof.

Tell him the length of your rig and the dates. He will tell you whether there is a covered site free and what it costs today. Bookings are taken over the phone or by email — there is nothing to fill in or pay for online.
